In 2009 playwright Quincy Long approached me about writing music for a new play. He was quick to clarify this would not be a musical, but a “play with songs," which turned out to be a dark, deep and hilarious piece about a murderous teen that borrowed from old thrasher flicks and after school special tropes. He envisioned the play being interspersed with throw-back doo-wop tunes as a kind of surreal juxtaposition to the bloodlust and insanity. I was immediately hooked, and particularly excited to sink my teeth into pure idiom—Quincy had taken care of the conceptual baggage, all I had to do was set his lyrics to the song style of choice!
This collaboration eventually produced two more plays with music and yielded some really fun stand-alone songs. With Adam Turner, Matt Scott and Sam Clement I was able to bring some of these tunes to life outside of the stage productions of the plays and into recorded form. Please enjoy!
